Thoroughbreds hang tough in tight game two loss to Ithaca

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team returned to action on Sunday at home against Ithaca. The Bombers exploded for 15 runs in a five-inning game-one win. Skidmore held the lead in the second contest before the visitors scored five unanswered to claim the sweep. Sunday was Skidmore's NFCA Strikeout Cancer Game.
 
Ithaca 15, Skidmore 0 (5 inn.)
  • The Bombers scored in each of the five innings including five in the third and three each in the second, fourth, and fifth.
  • Four Ithaca players finished with multiple hits. Belle de Oliviera was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
  • Anna Bello was 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times.
  • The visitors stole seven bases without getting caught.
  • Jessica Nachamie had Skidmore's lone hit – a two-out single in the bottom of the first.
  • Mallory Allen, who got hit by a pitch earlier in the second, was Skidmore's other base runner.
  • Anna Cornell threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts for Ithaca.

  • Skidmore (6-16, 0-4 Liberty League) starter Allen retired the first 14 Bomber hitters in a row before a two-out double in the fifth by Ava Rao broke up the no-hitter and perfect game.
  • The Thoroughbreds grabbed a 1- lead in the bottom of the fourth when Nachamie led off the inning with a home run over the right-center field fence.
  • Skidmore added another later in the inning on a Delaney Swain sacrifice fly to score Madi Gambino, who walked after Nachamie's long ball.
  • The Thoroughbreds then put runners in scoring position with one out in the fifth but were unable to push across any more to extend the lead.
  • The first three hitter singles for Ithaca (15-4, 3-1 Liberty League) in the sixth before an infield error score the first run and a sacrifice fly tied it up.
  • The Bombers then took the lead when a successful squeeze bunt led to two unearned runs.
  • Ithaca completed the scoring with one in the seventh.
  • Sam Waters finished 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Skidmore went 4-for-4 on steals.
  • Natalie Mayne had one of them. She was 1-for-2 with a walk.

  • Skidmore will host local foe Union on Monday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
