Thoroughbreds sweep Wisconsin Lutheran to open Florida trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team picked up its first wins of the season on Sunday as it swept Wisconsin Lutheran College, 4-1 and 8-4, in the first two of eight games at the Gene Cusic Classic.
  • Junior Quinn Hocom had it all working in the opener. The right-hander struck out a career-high 14 hitters over six solid innings in the opener.
  • Five different players had multipipe hits in the nightcap as Skidmore (2-1-1) combined for 13 knocks to put up eight on the Warriors.

Skidmore 4, Wisconsin Lutheran 1
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's only run on Hocom was an unearned tally in the top of the third inning on a passed ball and error.
  • Hocom's line was six innings, one unearned run, three hits, 14 punchouts, one walk, and one hit batter.
  • Sam Dalsimer worked a scoreless seventh inning for the save.
  • Skidmore stole six bases on WLC and was caught just once.
  • The Thoroughbreds loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second and opened the scoring with a Landon Schwartzman sacrifice fly.
  • The Warriors scored the equalizer in the bottom half of the third but stranded two runners on.
  • Skidmore answered with a pair in the top of the fourth when an error scored two with two outs.
  • Tyler Holm plated Skidmore's final run in the sixth with an infield single to score Andy Pelc, who doubled to lead off the inning.
  • The first two batters of the sixth inning reached for WLC before Hocom emptied the tank to register three straight punchouts to escape the jam.
  • Dalsimer worked around a one-out single in the seventh to close it out for Skidmore's first win of the year.

Skidmore 8, Wisconsin Lutheran 4
  • All tied at two in the bottom of the fourth, Skidmore plated three runs to take the lead and then three more in the sixth to put game two out of reach.
  • Nate Vandersea, Zachary Leiderman, Sam Kornet, Ewen Donald, and Holden Caney all finished with two hits.
  • Donald knocked in three runs, while Leiderman and Kornet both had two RBI.
  • Just one of Skidmore's 13 hits was for extra bases: a Leiderman run-scoring two-bagger in the sixth that made it 6-4.
  • Two batters later in the sixth, Donald wrapped a two-run single to right to complete the scoring.
  • Skidmore struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first on a Leiderman sacrifice fly.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran answered with one in the second.
  • A one-out error in Skidmore's third resulted in the go-ahead tally to come in unearned on a Donald bases-loaded single.
  • WLC again answered right away on a successful squeeze bunt to tie it at two.
  • Kornet's two-RBI single in the fourth highlighted Skidmore's big three-run frame.
  • Colt Ratliff was 3-for-4 for the Warriors with a triple and double. Wisconsin Lutheran had four extra-base hits.
  • Chase Siegel picked up his first win of the year for Skidmore with seven strikeouts over five innings.
  • Ethan Barnett worked two scoreless innings to push the Thoroughbreds across the finish line.
