Thoroughbreds forge historic game one comeback in split with Haverford

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Skidmore College baseball team came back from a 12-0 fourth-inning deficit with 17 unanswered runs, including 10 in the sixth, to beat Haverford 17-12 in the first of two at Terry Park on Tuesday. Haverford won the second game of the doubleheader by an 11-8 final despite another late Thoroughbred push.
 
Skidmore 17, Haverford 12
  • After Haverford (5-3) scored the first 12 runs of the game, Skidmore came roaring back with each of the final 17 tallies of the contest in the biggest comeback in recent history for the program.
  • Skidmore (3-2-1) sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning when it scored 10 runs. The first seven reached base safely on three free passes to start it and then four straight singles.
  • Six different players had RBI in the big inning for Skidmore. Ewen Donald drove in two in two separate at bats.
  • Charles Modlin, the winning pitcher, entered when it was 12-0 in the third. He tossed 3.1 innings of no-run, one-hit ball to earn his first-career victory.
  • Cal Champeau closed it out with a 1-2-3 seventh.
  • Eddie Galvao finished with four RBI on the game including a bases-clearing triple in the fourth, when it was 12-0, to kickstart Skidmore's comeback.
  • Zachary Leiderman had three hits and two walks to reach base in all five of his plate appearances.
  • Andy Pelc scored a game-high three runs. Five Thoroughbreds scored twice.
  • Landon Schwartzman was 2-for-3 with an RBI in three-straight innings.
  • For Haverford, Matt Dahhl was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Anthony Runfola also drove in three, while Harry Genth hit a tape-measure home run in the first inning for the Fords. David Bertz struck out nine of 4.2 innings.

  • Haverford held a 3-2 lead after three innings on home runs from Harry Genth (his second long ball of the day) and a two-run shot from Anthony Runfola.
  • Skidmore got two in the second on an EJ Stefanelli triple followed by a Jack Riva single to briefly take the lead.
  • Haverford responded with two runs right away in the third, and after Riva doubled in one for Skidmore to tie it at three, the Fords scored three more in the fourth to take the lead right back.
  • Haverford plated five in the sixth on just one hit to make it 11-3.
  • The Thoroughbreds did not go down quietly as they scored five times in the top of the seventh highlighted by a Sam Kornet two-run homer.
  • Carter Klein tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Skidmore's offense tallied 12 hits, with Ewen Donald going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs.
