Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Thoroughbreds downed by Clarkson, 11-7

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Turnover issues proved too costly to overcome as the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 11-7 defeat to Clarkson at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

Despite flashes of offensive brilliance and a stellar 14-save performance at goal from senior Collin Kuester, the Thoroughbreds (4-4, 1-1 Liberty League) finished the afternoon with a staggering 21 giveaways as a team against a Golden Knights (8-3, 1-1 Liberty League) defense that also limited quality looks on Skidmore shot attempts and never allowed the home team's offense to get in a rhythm throughout the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored a pair of goals in the first quarter, with freshman Mike Aiello and senior Tim Blue striking with solo scores for the Thoroughbreds.
  • In the second quarter, the Golden Knights came out firing with four unanswered goals to build a 6-2 lead with 4:21 remaining in the half. Skidmore responded with a pair of goals in quick succession from sophomores Jon Byrne and Cooper Hass, with the pair scoring within a 16 second stretch to cut the deficit down to two goals.
  • However, Clarkson struck again with just 28 seconds in the half to take a 7-4 lead into intermission.
  • At halftime, the Thoroughbreds had 11 giveaways which resulted in a drastic 22-to-13 shots advantage for Clarkson.
  • Skidmore showed fight to kick off the third quarter, with seniors Jon Bouvier and Jack Doherty scoring one after the other to pull within one goal, 7-6, with 10:10 on the clock.
  • However, that proved the closest the Thoroughbreds would pull within in their comeback bid, as the Golden Knights scored four of the final five goals in the game to hang on for the victory.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Bouvier led the offense with two goals to go with one groundball.
  • Gonsalves recorded two assists and picked up four groundballs.
  • Junior Jason Fastiggi finished 15-of-20 on faceoffs with a team0best seven groundballs.
  • Junior Jude Avelino Jr. led the team with three caused turnovers to go with four groundballs.
