14 Thoroughbreds score in 18-5 victory over New Paltz

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – A combined team effort helped the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team kick off the week with a lopsided 18-5 victory over New Paltz at Wachenheim Field on Monday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (5-4) had 14 different goal scorers throughout the match as the home team quickly pulled away from the Hawks (3-8) in the first quarter and had every healthy member of the team chip in during the second half. As a team, Skidmore finished the game with a staggering 61 shots and forced 24 New Paltz turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds jumped out from the opening faceoff by quickly building a 3-0 lead at the 11:41 mark after scores from seniors Jon Bouvier, Jimmy Gibbons and junior Andrew Meindl.
  • After the Hawks notched their first score of the game, Skidmore would answer back with eight unanswered goals extending halfway into the second quarter.
  • Two goals from senior Brian Gonsalves alongside scores from freshman Mike Aiello, junior David Koffler and senior Ryan Connolly gave Skidmore an 8-1 lead after one, and the lead ballooned to 11-1 at the 7:43 mark after additional goals from freshman Michael Dearborn, sophomore Jon Byrne and freshman Charlie Schutta.
  • New Paltz notched a second goal at the 2:41 mark to make it an 11-2 game entering halftime, before coming out with consecutive goals in the third quarter to cut the Skidmore lead down to 11-4 with 11:59 on the clock.
  • That proved the closest the Hawks would get in the second half as the Thoroughbreds closed out the game by scoring seven of the final eight goals.
  • Freshman Jake Weiner and senior David Muti each scored in the third quarter, while freshmen Shaun Costello, Schutta, Ty Samson and Muti rounded out the scoring efforts with fourth quarter goals.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS

  • Muti and Samson each notched a pair of goals, representing their first scores on the season.
