Skidmore opens league play with lopsided 19-8 win over Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team defeated visiting Vassar College, 19-8, in seven innings on Friday in the team's home and league opener at the Castle Diamond.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored at least three runs, including five in the second and seven in the fourth, in each of the first four innings to account for 17 of the team's 18 runs. Skidmore added one more in the sixth.
  • Quinn McDonald drove in five runs on a 2-for-2 day at the plate with a pair of two-run singles and a bases-loaded walk.
  • Zachary Leiderman was 3-for-3 and drove in four highlighted by a two-run home run in the third. He scored four times in four plate appearances.
  • Ewen Donald continued his hot streak with four hits in five trips. He finished with three RBI and three runs scored.
  • Sam Kornet and Trey Bourque both scored three times and went 2-for-5 at the plate.
  • Quinn Hocom struck out nine Brewer batters over five innings. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk.
  • Dash Edwards hit a grand slam in Vassar's five-run top of the sixth inning.
  • The Brewers led after half an inning thanks to Taison Jemison's two-run homer with two outs in the top of the first inning.
  • Donald brought in two with a single through the middle to tie it in Skidmore's half of the first before McDonald's walk gave Skidmore the lead for good.
  • Hocom struck out the side in order in the second setting the stage for five Skidmore runs on five hits with two errors in the bottom of the second.
  • Vassar made seven errors on the afternoon.
  •  The Thoroughbreds stretched the lead to nine with the help of Leiderman's long ball in the third.
  • Vassar got one back in the fourth before seven runs on six hits gave Skidmore a 15-run lead, 18-3, through four. The Thoroughbreds sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
  • Hocom completed his start by striking out the last hitter he saw to end the fifth with runners on the corners.
  • Vassar scored five unearned runs in the sixth including Edwards' grand slam with two outs.
  • Skidmore scored once more on an error in the sixth before reliever Ethan Barnett secured the win in the seventh by retiring the side and halting the contest due to the league's 10-run rule.
