Thoroughbreds complete series sweep of Vassar with pair of road victories

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team completed its Liberty League opening sweep of Vassar College with two road wins on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds won game one of the doubleheader 16-5 in seven innings before claiming victory in the nightcap, 8-4, to complete the three-game weekend sweep of the Vassar.
  • Skidmore (9-4-2, 3-0 Liberty League) outscored Vassar (5-8, 0-3 Liberty League) 43-17 over the weekend that featured two mercy-rule wins.
  • It is the second time that Skidmore has swept Vassar since the current divisional format began ahead of the 2022 season.
  • The Thoroughbreds have defeated the Brewers in nine out of the last 10 meetings and 14 out of the last 16.
  • With a run-scoring single in the fourth inning of game two, Skidmore senior Trey Bourque tied the career RBI record when he drove in the 118th run of his career. He is currently tied atop the list with Ross Aresco '00.

  • Sam Kornet hit the big blow of the game – a grand slam in the third inning to erase an early Vassar 1-0 lead.
  • Skidmore erupted one inning later, scoring 10 runs on just three impactful hits. All three hits scored two runs as Bourque hit a two-RBI double, Eddie Galvao hit a two-run single, and EJ Stefanelli brought in a pair with a single.
  • Skidmore walked seven times in the inning and got hit by two pitches. The Thoroughbreds send 15 batters to the plate in the monster inning.
  • Ricardo Reyna launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth for the Brewers.
  • Then, in the top of the fifth, Ewen Donald hit a two-run home run to right field to get Skidmore to 16.

  • Vassar threatened in the third and fourth off Skidmore starter Grayden Harris before finally breaking through in the fifth. Jensen Bergman hit a two-run homer to put the Brewers on the board.
  • Skidmore got one back in the sixth on a strikeout-passed ball. Vassar then pulled to within a run with single tallies in the sixth and seventh. The Brewers left the bases loaded in the sixth as Thoroughbreds reliever Jack Collins came in and wiggled out of a jam.

  • Collins did not surrender an earned run over 2.2 innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.
