Skidmore opens with pair of tight games at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Skidmore College baseball team opened with a pair of tight contests on the road at McDaniel College in Maryland. The Thoroughbreds fell 8-6 in the opener before darkness forced a 10-10 tie after nine complete innings in the nightcap.

Ewen Donald, Nate Vandersea, and Trey Bourque each racked up three hits on the day. Donald had the big blast of the day for the Thoroughbreds: a three-run home run in the sixth inning of game two that gave Skidmore the lead.

McDaniel 8, Skidmore 6
  • McDaniel scored the final five runs of the game after falling into a 6-3 hole.
  • Skidmore raced out to a 3-0 lead after its first two plate appearances. Donald singled up the middle to open the scoring in the first with two outs.
  • Then, the first four Thoroughbreds reached in the second as Andy Pelc singled in a run before Zachary Leiderman drove in another on a sacrifice fly in the second for the 3-0 lead.
  • MccDaniel answered with three of its own powered by a pair of extra-base hits in the bottom of the second to tie it up.
  • Skidmore rallied again in the third for three highlighted by run-scoring singles from Vandersea and Pelc as well as a two-out unearned run.
  • The Green Terror left the bases loaded in the third when Skidmore starter Quinn Hocom wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Hocom surrendered three runs and three hits with three strikeouts over three innings of work.
  • The hosts then scored all three of their runs unearned in the fourth to tie it up again.
  • McDaniel completed the scoring with single runs in the fifth and seventh.
  • Fifteen out of 16 Skidmore hitters were retired before the Thoroughbreds put the tying run on base in the ninth. McDaniel reliever Conor Henderson retired the only hitter he faced for the save.

Skidmore 10, McDaniel 10
  • Skidmore had leads of 5-0 and 9-4 before the hosts scored three in the eighth to tie it and then another in the ninth to knot it up again after Skidmore re-gained the lead.
  • Mac Cady doubled with two outs in the ninth before coming around to score on a Jack Riva single to centerfield giving Skidmore a 10-9 lead.
  • A pair of one-out walks set the stage for a Shea McKenna game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
  • After McDaniel scored a pair in the fifth to pull to within two, Donald launched the team's first homer of the year to right field to score three and extend the lead back to five.
  • McDaniel's comeback was highlighted by RBI triples by both McKenna and Joey Hubinger. McDaniel hit three triples in both games on the day.
