Thoroughbreds drop pair at Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Skidmore College softball team lost a pair of run-rule shortened games (8-0, 14-2) on the road at Westfield State on Wednesday.
 
Westfield State 8, Skidmore 0 (5 inn.)
  • The game was a one-run affair until the bottom of the third, when the Owls scored twice and then added five in the bottom of the fourth to reach the eight-run threshold to activate the run rule when Skidmore was retired in the top of the fifth.
  • Natalie Mayne and Claire Stone had the Skidmore hits – both singles.
  • Sophia Finch walked in the second inning to account for the other Thoroughbred base runner.
  • Sarah Hough went 3-for-3 for the hosts with two RBI.
  • Rylie Camacho hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth as WSU scored five runs on five hits in the inning.
 
Westfield State 14, Skidmore 2 (5 inn.)
  • Skidmore (4-6) scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out infield error. Jessica Nachamie, who singled, and Madi Gambino, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored.
  • Westfield State (10-2) jumped out to an immediate lead when it scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a Janna Jose three-run home run.
  • The Owls plated three more on five straight hits, including a Mia Alfonoso two-RBI double, to take a 9-0 lead in the second.
  •  Skidmore closed the gap with two in the fourth before the hosts completed the scoring with five more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Westfield State finished with 15 hits. Six players had at least two.
  • Erin Gibbons had the other Skidmore base hit – a leadoff single in the third.
UP NEXT
  • Skidmore will visit Oneonta on Friday before opening at home on Saturday, March 22 against VTSU Castleton. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
