Skidmore swept by Castleton in home opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team fell to Castleton in both contests on Saturday in the home opener for the Thoroughbreds. The Spartans won game one 11-0 in six innings before coming from behind to win the second game, 10-5.  
Castleton 11, Skidmore 0 (6 inn.)
  • After scoring once in the first, Castleton (7-5) scored twice in the second, fourth, and fifth, before adding four more in the sixth.
  • Makayla Walsh was 3-for-4 with three RBI, a triple and two doubles.
  • Francie McMahon and Jordan Hill both finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • The Spartans had 17 hits as a team including seven extra-base hits.
  • Bonham had two out of Skidmore's three hits – both singles.
 
Castleton 10, Skidmore 5
  • Skidmore struck first with the first three runs of the game – two in the first and one in the second.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored pair in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of infield errors leading to two runs on wild pitches.
  • Skidmore loaded the bases with two outs and pushed across one more in a Bonham RBI infield single.
  • Castleton answered with two in the third before exploding for five runs on five hits with a pair of errors in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. Jess Heinrichs hit a two-run homer in the frame.
  • The Thoroughbreds loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and settled for one, cutting the deficit to three, on a Delaney Swain sacrifice fly.
  • The Spartans got it back in the sixth despite leaving the bases loaded.
  • Bonham doubled in Madi Gambino, who walked, in the sixth before Castleton reliever Dana Elkins came in and retired all four batters she faced to record the save.
  • The Spartans scored two more insurance tallies in the seventh for the 10-5 final.
  • Madison Gould was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Taylor Russell reached in each of her five plate appearances for the visitors.
 
UP NEXT
  • Skidmore will head to Middlebury on Tuesday, March 25 before two home doubleheaders next weekend against Delhi and John Jay.
