Utica rallies in ninth as Thoroughbreds, Pioneers tie in 10

UTICA, N.Y. – Utica scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Skidmore College baseball team, 8-8, on Wednesday. The game was halted after the 10th inning due to darkness.
  • Down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Skidmore led by two entering the frame.
  • Skidmore scored five of its eight runs in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Landon Schwartzman followed later by two-run singles from both Quinn McDonald and Nate Vandersea. The inning gave the Thoroughbreds a 6-3 lead.
  • A balk brought around the seventh Skidmore run in the fourth inning.
  • The Pioneers then closed to within one with a tally in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth on a Jacob Pian two-run single.
  • The Thoroughbreds stretched the lead back to two when in the top of the seventh, Eddie Galvao tripled in Schwartzman with two outs.
  • Skidmore had 14 hits to just six for the hosts. Trey Bourque finished 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored.
  • Sam Kornet reached four times on a 2-for-4 day with two walks.
  • Charles Modlin pitched two perfect innings of relief for the Thoroughbreds with one strikeout. The sophomore has not allowed a run through 7.2 innings of work on the season.
  • Carter Klein came in and retired the Pioneers in order in the 10th. Will Markwood struck out three hitters over three innings of relief, where he surrendered just one run and one hit.
  • The Utica bullpen allowed just two runs over eight innings.
  • It is Skidmore's second tie of the young season. The Thoroughbreds are 6-4-2. Utica is 5-4-1.
