Bats stay hot in run-rule win over NEC as Thoroughbreds split Wednesday in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Madison Bonham hit a "walk-off" grand slam to put the Skidmore College softball team to the run-rule threshold in a 9-1, five-inning win over New England College on Wednesday. Skidmore fell to Ursinus College, 8-4 in its second game.
  • The Thoroughbreds are 4-2 through three of four days in Florida.
Skidmore 9, New England College 1
  • Bonham's grand slam put an immediate end of the game via the run rule with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Mallory Allen, Natalie Mayne, and Sam Waters loaded the bases.
  • Jessica Nachamie also homered. She hit a solo blast in the fourth to make it 4-1.
  • Skidmore struck with four runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a two-run Cortney Somsky triple.
  • Claire Stone and Nachamie also drove in runs in the inning for the Thoroughbreds.
  • A single, stolen base, and another single from NEC in the third cut the Skidmore lead to three.
  • NEC threatened again in the fifth, but Skidmore gunned down a runner between third and home before getting out of the jam with a pop out one batter later.
  • Allen went the distance for Skidmore in the circle to pick up her second victory of the trip. She scattered nine hits but allowed just one run with a walk and two strikeouts.

Ursinus 8, Skidmore 4
  • Waters doubled and came around to score on a Nachamie single to center field giving the Thoroughbreds a quick 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Ursinus scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, but Skidmore grabbed the lead back in the second when a throw got away.
  • Ursinus won it with two runs in each the fourth, fifth, and sixth.
  • Skidmore trimmed the deficit to one in the seventh on a Bonham hard-hit single to score Madi Gambino, who walked and stole second.
  • Ursinus left the potential tying run in the on-deck circle by inducing a pop out to end it.
  • Lucy Wolf pitched five innings of one-run ball to earn the victory in relief.
