CASTLETON, Vt. – The Skidmore College volleyball team defeated Vermont State University Castleton in four sets (25-12, 20-25, 25-19, 25-13) on Friday evening on the road.
- Skidmore (7-8) used kills from eight different players while hitting .219 as a team including a .407 mark in the decisive fourth set.
- First-year Chloe Heitman led the way for the Thoroughbreds with 12 kills with four digs.
- Maya Stolarz had nine kills to go with three blocks and three digs.
- Natalie Pedersen dropped seven kills, four digs, and three block assists.
- Catriona Hoelperl finished with 22 assists, six aces, 11 digs, and six kills for 12.0 total points in a solid all-around performance.
- Skidmore had an 11-6 edge in aces.
- Both teams had 40 kills and five blocks.
- Jocelyn Ray led the hosts with 11 kills, while Madison Sheehan had 10 with a pair of blocks.
- Alondra Rojas had 26 assists and 17 digs for Castleton (8-8).
- Skidmore pounced in the first set, scoring 15 out of the match's first 19 points for an early cushion on the way to a big win to go up 1-0.
- A 9-2 Castleton run in the second catapulted the Spartans to a 14-7 led in set two. Skidmore fended off three set points to get to 20 before a Rojas kill tied the match at one.
- After an early deficit in the third set, Skidmore rattled off seven unanswered to take the lead for good. The Thoroughbred lead was two, 20-18, when they ended the set on a 5-1 run featuring back-to-back kills from both Hoelperl and Pedersen.
- Castleton scored the first point of the fourth, but Skidmore scored the next nine unanswered and 11-of-12 to near a double-digit lead. The Thoroughbreds committed just two attack errors in the deciding fourth set.
