Thoroughbreds tie it late, win in double-OT over William Smith

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Gianna DiGioacchino buried the golden goal off a penalty corner at 75:16 to send the Skidmore College field hockey team past William Smith, 2–1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park. Brooke Golden scored the fourth-quarter equalizer and Erin Ohlenbusch set up both Thoroughbred tallies as Skidmore moved to 6–6 (2–1 Liberty League). William Smith drops to 6–6 (1–1).
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Herons broke through at the 5:16 mark of the second when Madison Campisi finished through traffic off a feed from Mia Batchelder.
  • Trailing 1–0 late, Skidmore pulled its goalkeeper with 2:15 left in regulation. The move paid off moments later: following an Ella Costa corner, Golden drove a low shot through traffic to tie it with 1:34 remaining, with Ohlenbusch earning the assist again.
  • In overtime, Molly Van Vranken rang the post at 63:44 and forced two saves inside the final two minutes of the first extra period.
  • Nicole Sylvestri denied Eliza Freeland at 66:59 to keep it level. It was William Smith's only shot on goal over the fourth quarter and both overtime periods.
  • The winner came on a second-overtime Skidmore corner. Ohlenbusch teed up DiGioacchino, who ripped home the decisive strike from the arc at 75:16 for her third of the season and first game-winner.
  • Sylvestri finished with seven saves, including four in the first quarter.
  • William Smith's Olivia Terranova made six saves on eight shots on goal.
  • Team shots favored the Herons, 15–12, while corners were 10–7 for William Smith.
  • The visitors accounted for each of the first 10 shots in the game, but Skidmore limited the damage to just one to stay within reach for the late push.
  • The Herons also had the first seven penalty corners of the contest.
  • Skidmore outshot William Smith 12-6 through the second half and overtime.
  • The Thoroughbreds have now defeated William Smith in all three meetings within the last calendar year – each by one goal.
