ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team took nationally 22
nd-ranked Rochester to the brink on Friday, but lost 2-1 in penalty strokes to the Yellowjackets on the road.
- After 80 minutes of play and a 1-1 score, the hosts converted all four of their penalty strokes to pick up the 2-1 win.
- Abigal Mateer scored the clincher for Rochester (10-2, 1-0 Liberty League).
- The game was tied for the final 59:26.
- Skidmore (5-6, 1-1 Liberty League) took a 1-0 lead just before the six-minute mark when Ella Costa knocked in a rebound. The initial shot from Abby Ezickson stayed out thanks to a Cassidy Romano defensive save.
- Costsa now has four goals on the year – sharing the team lead with Mia Angwin and Colby Paul.
- The Thoroughbreds held the lead throughout the first period, but Rochester leveled the game at the 5:34 mark of the second quarter with a player advantage when Grayson Honig scored on a rebound off a shot that hit the post.
- The Skidmore defense, spearheaded by junior goalkeeper Nicole Sylvestri, stood strong despite being outshot 12-2 across the second and third periods.
- Sylvestri turned in a career-best 17 saves, including four in each the first and fourth quarters. She also made four stops across the two overtime periods to help send the game to strokes despite Skidmore being whistled for four cards totaling 11 minutes.
- A yellow card put Skidmore down a player for the first five minutes of the second overtime period.
- The Yellowjackets received just one caution – a green card – in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
- Moments before the Rochester penalty, Skidmore received a chance with a penalty stroke. Kara Houston stonewalled Paul's attempt and kept the game knotted at one.
- Rochester finished with a 38-19 edge in shots, while shots on goal finished 18-12.
- Houston made 10 saves for the hosts. Â
- Rochester held a 31-13 advantage in penalty corners.
