Late goal gives RPI 4-3 win over Skidmore in league finale

TROY, N.Y. — Skidmore got two goals from Emma Houff, but RPI netted the winner with 2:11 to play as the Thoroughbreds fell, 4–3, in Liberty League field hockey on Saturday at Harkness Field.
  • Mia Angwin also added a goal (her third of the week), while Nicole Sylvestri made five saves. Houff also finished the week with three goals.
  • Skidmore has completed Liberty League play and will await its postseason destiny based on the results of the next week. The Thoroughbreds finished 3-4 and are 9-9 overall.
  • Rensselaer is 2-4 in the Liberty League, with one game remaining, and is 8-7 on the season. The Engineers can get into a tie for fifth, but miss the playoffs in all tiebreakers.
  • Skidmore needs losses by William Smith (vs. Rochester) and RPI (vs. Vassar) on Wednesday to make the five-team tournament.
  • RPI opened the scoring at 10:09 of the first quarter through Sophia Brown before Houff converted a penalty stroke at 14:06 to level it, 1–1.
  • Skidmore grabbed a 2–1 lead early in the second when Angwin finished off a penalty-corner sequence from Brooke Golden at 17:28.
  • Brown answered for the Engineers at 19:55 to send the game to halftime tied, 2–2.
  • After a scoreless third that featured two saves from Sylvestri, RPI's Katie Galgay pushed the hosts ahead, 3–2, 42 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter.
  • Houff pulled Skidmore even with 5:38 remaining, slotting home off a feed from Abby Ezickson at 54:22.
  • Brown completed her hat trick on a penalty corner at 57:49 for the decisive goal.
  • RPI held a 23–15 edge in shots and a 13–7 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Sylvestri finished with five saves, while RPI goalkeeper Tess Garchinsky stopped six.

Skidmore will round out the regular season and honor its seniors next Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. against Cortland.
