Skidmore bested by St. Olaf, 6-3, to close trip with a split

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – St. Olaf scored three in the second and two more in the third to defeat the Skidmore College men's hockey team, 6-3 on Saturday in the second of two games for the Thoroughbreds in Minnesota.

  • The Thoroughbreds responded quickly after falling behind 1-0 in the first period, with Evan Brown scoring at 13:20, just 49 seconds after the hosts took the lead, to tie the game 1-1. The first-year's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Danny Magnuson and Coleman Jenkins. Magnuson assisted on two out of Skidmore's three goals.
  • After Skidmore killed 90 seconds of a 5-on-3 situation in the second period, the Oles made use of the extended 5-minute power play with a man-up goal from Nicholas Sewecke to take the lead at 6:30.
  • Then, St. Olaf doubled its lead with an Adam Johnson goal at 11:45.
  • Kaeden Patrick's goal at 15:24 of the middle frame brought the Thoroughbreds within one. Mitchell Floccare and Jaden York had the helpers.
  • St. Olaf quickly responded, however, pushing their lead to 4-2 with a goal 60 seconds later before the period ended.
  • In the third, Ryan Waltman gave Skidmore a boost with a power-play goal at 6:07, narrowing the deficit to 5-3. Magnuson set it up for his team-leading 12 assist of the season.
  • Down two, Skidmore continued to press offensively, but St. Olaf's Pavel Karasek sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, his second tally of the night, at 18:34, for the 6-3 final.
  • Tommy Aitken made 25 saves for Skidmore including five on four Skidmore penalty kills, including the major.
  • St. Olaf's Matthew Malin stopped 22 of 25 shots to earn the win.
