#1 Hobart overcomes third-period deficit, edges Skidmore 5-3

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hobart scored four times in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and extend its streaks with a 5-3 victory over the Skidmore College men's hockey team on Friday night.
  • Hobart (12-0, 9-0 NEHC) has won 26 in a row and is unbeaten over its last 37 dating back to Nov., 2023. The Statesmen have won the last two national championships. This was the first time all season, and just the third time during the winning streak, that Hobart has allowed three goals.
  • Zach Lindewirth scored two of them, his sixth and seventh of the year, extending his team lead. They were both on the power play. Hobart entered the day with the nation's top penalty kill at well over 90 percent.
  • Hobart struck first, just before the midpoint of the first period, on a Kahlil Fontana tally from Tristan Fasig and Ignat Belov.
  • Skidmore (7-7, 5-4 NEHC) evened it up on Evan Brown's fifth of the campaign at 15:02 on a back-hander over the glove on a rush with Coleman Jenkins and Cooper Rice.
  • Lindewirth scored his first, on the power play, at 6:42 to give the Thoroughbreds the lead. Danny Magnuson and Kaeden Patrick assisted on the tip.
  • Skidmore led 2-1 into the third, when Lindewirth connected again on the man advantage just 19 seconds into the period to double the lead. Open in the slot, he grabbed the feed from Brown and ripped it home. Ryan Waltman collected the secondary helper.
  • After an elbowing penalty was assessed to Skidmore, Auston Mourar scored from Cooper Swift and Tanner Daniels for the Statesmen to pull to within one at 3:36.
  • The visitors tied it at 7:04 with Tanner Daniels' ninth of the season from a short angle under the bar.
  • Then, Hobart took the lead for the first time with 9:50 remaining when Nick Dimatos's shot was ruled to have crossed the line under the crossbar.
  • Luke Aquaro scored on Skidmore's empty net for the 5-3 final.
  • Daniels finished with three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Tommy Aitken had 30 saves in the effort for Skidmore, while Jacob Zwirecki blocked a game-high five shots.
