Thoroughbreds win opener in Minnesota, 2-1, at Saint John’s

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team won its first of two games in Minnesota, 2-1, over Saint John's University on Friday night.
  • Tied at one in the third, senior captain Jack Strauss scored his second goal of the season on a tic-tac-toe play with Jaden York and Danny Magnuson after a Johnnie turnover at the blue line.
  • The hosts came back with nine out of the next 10 shot attempts in a stretch that saw Tommy Aitken record six out of his 19 saves of the evening to preserve the one-goal lead.
  • Skidmore made a push for an insurance tally with some offensive pressure of its own culminating in a Magnuson shot that rang off the post with 2:57 remaining.
  • Saint John's then generated three shots with the net empty in a desperate attempt for the equalizer. Aitken saved two of them, and Jacob Zwirecki blocked the other before Ethan Heidepriem, who scored Skidmore's first goal, won three-straight faceoffs in the final minute to put it on ice.
  • Skidmore improves to 7-5 with the victory in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
  • Saint John's is 5-5.
  • Skidmore had the better of the play in the first period and nearly grabbed the lead when Cooper Rice hit the post.
  • Skidmore broke through with the first goal of the game with 4:06 left in the first period, Heidepriem trailed a rush and took a feed from Kaeden Patrick and scored his fourth of the year blocker side to give the Thoroughbreds the lead. Will Dow-Kenny also assisted.
  • After a scoreless second period, the Johnnies tied it up on a Cooper Anderson wraparound at the 4:41 mark of the third.
  • Both teams finished 0-for-2 on the power play despite a combined 11 penalties being assessed.
  • Skidmore finished with a 35-20 edge in shots. Jon Howe made 33 saves for Saint John's.
