Skidmore drops league opener in 4 to RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team salvaged the third set, but was unable to push the comeback further in a 3-1 loss (22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25) to RIT in the Liberty League opener for both teams on Friday night.
  • RIT has won seven in a row improving its overall record to 11-5.
  • Skidmore is 5-10.
  • After dropping the first two sets, the Thoroughbreds came alive to take the third. Things were looking good for Skidmore early on in the fourth set as well before the Tigers went on a 6-1 run to take the lead and later took a stranglehold on it for the win.
  • Skidmore had a pair with double-digit kills. Madison Manning led with 13 and a .320 percentage, while Rudi Reyes finished with 12.
  • Maya Stolarz tallied eight kills and three blocks.
  • Catriona Hoelperl registered 39 assists, 14 digs, three aces, five kills, and a block.
  • Athena Braverman finished with a team high 16 digs.
  • Mia Gerber paced the visiting Tigers with 17 kills and a .317 swing percentage.
  • Skidmore led 19-15 in the first set before the guests went on a 6-1 lead to take a 21-20 lead. After Skidmore tied it, RIT scored three in a row to get to set point. Skidmore fought off one set point before RIT won it on a Gerber kill.
  • Skidmore also had an early lead in the second set. It was 13-all when RIT busted ahead on a 10-2 run to take a commanding two sets to one lead.
  • Skidmore trailed 15-10 in the third set. Then, a 10-2 Thoroughbred run that featured kills from five different players won the race to 20. RIT stopped the bleeding before Skidmore scored the next three out of four to get to 23. A Madison Manning kill four points later sent the match to the fourth.
  • Skidmore was ahead 10-7 in the fourth before four unanswered by the guests gave them the lead. RIT held it, eventually leading by as many as eight down the stretch. The Thoroughbreds scored three on match point to get to 20 when a Sydney Neff kill put it away for the Tigers.
