Thoroughbreds claim set from Middlebury for 1st time in over a decade

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Skidmore College volleyball team took a set from Middlebury for the first time since 2013 in a four-set loss (12-25, 25-17, 25-27, 21-25) to the Panthers on Tuesday evening.
  • The Thoroughbreds grabbed the second set after running out to a big lead and holding it. Skidmore's last set win against Middlebury came on Oct. 9, 2013. This marked the end of an 11-match sweep streak.
  • Skidmore hit .394 in the second stanza with just one attacking error on 33 swings.
  • Middlebury made just one error itself in the first with 11 kills to ease to the first-set victory.
  • The run didn't stop after the second set for Skidmore (5-9). Neither team led by more than two points in the third in an epic showdown that featured 14 ties and five lead changes.
  • Skidmore led 21-20 when the hosts scored three points in a row to get to within two of taking the 2-1 lead. An attack error got Skidmore to 22 before a Molly Harrison kill created a pair of set points for the Panthers.
  • Angie Mozrall and Rudi Reyes responded with back-to-back kills to tie it at 24. Skidmore fought off one more set point before another Harrison kill followed by a Caroline Byrne ace won the set for the hosts.
  • Skidmore also pushed hard in the fourth. The Thoroughbreds led by a few early but it was tight again late. The score was tied at 15, 17, and 18 before Middlebury went on a quick 4-1 run to lead 22-19. The Panthers got three out of the final four points to close it out.
