COBLESKILL, NY – Led by 24 combined kills and eight total blocks from star junior
Jazlin Chen, the Skidmore College women's volleyball team completed a pair of straight set victories over host SUNY Cobleskill and Keuka College at the Cobleskill Tri-Match on Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds (5-8) took a commanding 2-0 set lead before needing a late third set comeback to secure the morning sweep over the Fighting Tigers (2-8). In the early afternoon match, Skidmore fended off a relentless Wolves (4-6) team that played a competitive second and third sets, but ultimately clutched out the second straight sets win on the day.
SKIDMORE 3, SUNY COBLESKILL 0
- After starting out the match with an early 4-2 lead, Skidmore proceeded to make an extensive 17-2 run to pull away 21-4 in the first set. Junior Rudi Reyes led the way with five kills, while sophomore Madison Manning added on three of her own, with her last one forcing set point.
- Junior Maya Stolarz put the first set away with her second kill off the eighth assist from Catriona Hoelperl, giving Skidmore a 25-15 set win.
- In set two, the Thoroughbreds utilized a 10-3 scoring run after starting out with an 8-6 lead to once again comfortably pull away during the middle phases of the set. Chen recorded four kills, while senior Tiffany Flores and sophomore Athena Braverman each had a service ace.
- Skidmore clinched the set and took the commanding 2-0 lead after the Fighting Tigers committed a pair of attack errors, ultimately winning set two 25-16.
- In the most competitive set of the entire match, the Thoroughbreds got out to a 15-10 lead early in the third set before Cobleskill responded with a 14-7 spurt to force set point for the first time.
- Facing adversity for the first time on the day, the green and yellow rose to the challenge and scored four consecutive points to complete the sweep, 26-24.
- Skidmore had a block party in the third set after finishing with five blocks as a team, four of which coming from Chen.
SKIDMORE 3, KEUKA 0
- The Thoroughbreds picked up from where they left off in the first set, with Chen recording five kills as the green and yellow took care of business, 25-20, over the Wolves.
- Set two was a game of runs, as Skidmore got out to an 11-6 advantage before Keuka responded with an 11-6 run of their own to tie things up at 17 apiece.
- The Thoroughbreds immediately countered with a quick 5-1 burst to go up 22-18, with Manning and Angie Mozrall each recording a pair of kills. However, the Wolves once again tied things up with four quick unanswered.
- But it was Skidmore that delivered the final blow, with Manning and Chen earning the final three kills of the match to take the set, 25-22.
- Keuka began set three with the upper hand, taking a 14-10 lead as the Wolves looked to force a fourth set. Skidmore fought back to eventually tie things up at 21 apiece, led by the trio of Chen, Reyes and Engelhardt.
- After a Skidmore attack error briefly put the Wolves up, a pair of Chen kills and a Hoelperl service ace gave the Thoroughbreds match point at 24-22. Keuka fended off the first match point with a kill, but Stolarz ended their comeback hopes with the match ending kill to win 25-23.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Chen finished with a career high in kills (14) in the latter game against Keuka
- Manning finished with 18 total kills on the day, while Reyes recorded 15 combined
- Freshman Lucia Engelhardt made a handful of stellar defensive plays at the net after recording a trio of solo blocks against Cobleskill, followed by a pair against Keuka
- Flores completed her day with 27 total assists and seven service aces
