Skidmore finishes Pacific Coast Classic with losses to Whittier, #15 La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Skidmore College volleyball team dropped both of its final two matches to close out the Pacific Coast Classic. The Thoroughbreds fell to Whittier College in straight sets (17-25, 20-25, 10-25) before succumbing to nationally 15th-ranked University of La Verne (10-25, 15-25, 13-25)
 
Whittier 3, Skidmore 0
  • Junior Jazlin Chen led Skidmore (0-4) with eight kills. Classmate Rudi Reyes had four kills and a team high three blocks.
  • Sophomore Catriona Hoelperl finished with 13 assists, 11 digs, and two aces, leading the team in all three categories.
  • Riley DeGroot was the leader for Whittier (2-1) with 13 kills.
  • Whittier his .291 as a team, while Skidmore finished at .085.
  • The Thoroughbreds were ahead, 10-9, in the middle of the first set when the Poets broke off five out of six to take the lead for good. Another 5-1 run gave Whittier a 20-15 lead.
  • The Poets scored six in a row to get the second set going. Skidmore trailed by seven when it got right back in it thanks to a 6-1 run that featured a pair of Angie Mozrall kills. Whittier quickly got to set point with a 4-1 spurt and got a 2-0 match lead two points later.
  • The Poets led wire-to-wire in the third game.
 
#15 La Verne 3, Skidmore 0
  • La Verne (3-0) had a pair of players in double figures in kills, led by Mya Ray with 10 to go along with nine digs and four aces.
  • Lauren Gott also had 10 kills for the Leopards.
  • La Verne hit .413 as a team to compliment 16 service aces and a 7-0 edge in blocks.
  • The Thoroughbreds were paced by first-year Natalie Pedersen and Chen with three kills each.
  • Hoelperl added eight more assists and finished with a pair of kills.
  • Isobel Streeper had a team high six digs.
 
NEXT UP: Skidmore will return home next weekend to host the Skidmore Classic. The Thoroughbreds open against Brandeis on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.
