Thoroughbreds win series against Vassar, 2-1, with Sunday split

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Skidmore College baseball team faced Liberty League foe Vassar College in a doubleheader and the Thoroughbreds won the first game 14-5 before dropping the nightcap 10-9 in 11 innings. The loss was the first in the conference for Skidmore, which is now 12-9 overall and 5-1 in the league. The Brewers are 5-15 and 4-6.

Skidmore 14, Vassar 5
  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Thoroughbreds scored five times on five hits to take the lead.
  • Nate Vandersea led off the third with a single and was followed by hits from Jaden Torrado and Shaw Pedemonti to load the bases. Trey Bourque, the cleanup hitter, walked to force in a run.
  • Zachary Leiderman singled to right to score Torrado and Pedemonti came home on a passed ball. A single from Owen Roy plated two more runs.
  • Skidmore made it 7-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, but the Brewers scored three times in the sixth inning to reduce the deficit.
  • Sam Kornet doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth - the Thoroughbreds were the home team despite the game being in Poughkeepsie - to score two for a 9-3 edge.
  • A five-run eighth inning, which included three hits, four errors, and a pair of balks concluded the scoring. Roy had an RBI single in the frame.
  • Skidmore had 13 hits - 12 of which were singles - with Leiderman (3 for 5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Roy (3 for 4, 1 run, 3 RBI) collecting three apiece.

  • Chase Siegel started and earned the win after going for 5.1 innings. A save went to Ethan Caiazza, who pitched the final 3.2 innings.

Vassar 10, Skidmore 9 (11 inn.)

  • The Brewers took the lead in extra innings on a two-out single up the middle by Ty Murray.
  • Skidmore had the winning run on base in their half of the inning as Owen Roy and Sam Kornet both walked, but Vassar's Luke Barrientos induced a double play ball to end the contest.
  • The 11 innings are the most the Thoroughbreds have played this season, surpassing a 10-inning affair with Wisconsin Lutheran on March 11.
  • A Zachary Leiderman double down the left field line brought home two first inning runs to give Skidmore the lead.
  • The Brewers scored four times in the second, but the Thoroughbreds answered with one on a sacrifice fly from Jaden Torrado.
  • Three runs in both the third and fourth innings put Skidmore ahead 9-6.
  • Three different players had runs batted in in the third and the big blow in the fourth was a two-RBI single to center by Eddie Galveo.
  • The other run batted in came on a bases loaded walk by Nate Vandersea, who also had an RBI the inning before.
  • Vassar tied the score with three unearned runs in the sixth inning.
  • Leiderman finished the game going 2 for 4 with two runs and two runs batted in, while Vandersea went 2 for 4 with a run and two knocked in. Shaw Pedemonti added two hits and two runs.
