Vandersea’s second game-winning sac fly of week opens Vassar series with 4-3 Skidmore win

POUGHKEPSIE, N.Y. – Nate Vandersea broke a 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth before turning a double play to strand the tying run on third base in the bottom half of the winning as the Skidmore College baseball team opened a three-game weekend series against Vassar with a 4-3 win.
  • Runners were on first-and-third when Thoroughbred closer Christian Giresi induced a ground ball to Vandersea at shortstop, who stepped on the bag and delivered an accurate throw to Sam Kornet at first to double up Vassar No. 2 hitter Jensen Bergman. Right after Skidmore (11-8, 4-0 Liberty League) regained the lead, Murray singled through the right side to open the bottom of the ninth, stole second, and got to third on a Herring bunt single with one out leading to the ground ball that ended it.
  • Eddie Galvao scored the winning run for Skidmore. He walked to lead off the ninth and slid to second on a Ewen Donald sacrifice bunt. Galvao got to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Vandersea's fly ball to centerfield.
  • Skidmore plated the first run in the top of the first when Jaden Torrado singled and got to second on an outfield miscue. Two fly balls, the latter a Trey Bourque sacrifice fly, scored him.
  • The Thoroughbreds made it 3-0 in the second. The rally started with a four-pitch walk to Zachary Leiderman and Owen Roy getting plunked. Galvao bunted to move them both over, and two runs scored on a Donald infield single with another Vassar error, this time on an infield throw.
  • Skidmore starter Ameer Hasan was in cruise control until the seventh. The first three players got hits including a Marc Milano double and a Taison Jemison RBI single for Vassar's first run. The Brewers cut the deficit to one on a successful safety squeeze by batter Ricardo Reyna.
  • Vassar (4-14, 2-5 Liberty League) tied it at three in the eighth when Reid Lapekas led off with a triple and scored one batter later on a Jack Silvera single. Giresi fanned two out of the next three hitters to avoid further damage.
  • Leiderman was 2-for-3 for Skidmore with a double.
  • Hasan's line was a good one in the no decision. He surrendered two runs on seven his with a walk and four strikeouts over seven innings.
  • Giresi improved to 3-0 for Skidmore.
  • Michael Came allowed three runs, one earned, over seven innings for Vassar. He walked two.
  • Skidmore did not strike out once all game.
NEXT UP: The series concludes with two games on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. back in Poughkeepsie.
