Thoroughbreds beat Union 5-4 to clinch playoff spot on final day of regular season

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's tennis team secured its place in next weekend's conference tournament with a 5-4 win over Union College on Sunday morning at the outdoor courts at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
  • Skidmore (5-11, 4-4 Liberty League) has finished tied for fourth with St. Lawrence. The Thoroughbreds and Saints will meet in a first-round match in Ithaca on Friday, May 3.
  • Union finishes at 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.
  • With Skidmore ahead 4-3, sophomore Nika Mori clinched the victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dimitris Binopoulos.
  • The Thoroughbreds had to rally after the Garnet Chargers took two out of three in doubles.
  • Griffin Biernat and Louis Bourn got the doubles point for Skidmore, an 8-6 win over Fukushima/Bellemare.
  • Adel Aissaoui and Kyle Lundberg dropped their match at No. 3 doubles in a tiebreak.
  • Skidmore turned it around with quick wins by Biernat in the third singles match (6-2, 6-3) and Louis Bourn at No. 1 (6-1, 6-4) to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Union got a win at No. 5. Before Lundberg played to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Daniel Saxe in the fourth match to put Skidmore within one.
  • Union picked up the final point with a win at sixth singles.
  • Skidmore swept the weekend at home in the first two dual matches played on the new courts.
  • The Garnet Chargers lost both of their weekend matches by one.
  • Skidmore's winning streak against Union extends to 37. Union's last victory in the head-to-head series was in the spring of 1985.
