Skidmore clinches home field despite loss to #12 Ithaca

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team completed the regular season with a home game against nationally 12th-ranked Ithaca on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds hung around in the first quarter before the Bombers pulled away and posted a 20-7 win.
  • Ithaca, the only unbeaten team in the Liberty League, finishes as the top seed with a 10-0 conference record. The Bombers are 15-1 overall and have earned a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament.
  • Skidmore finishes the regular season 9-8 and 6-4 in the league. The Thoroughbreds will be the No. 4 seed and host No. 5 Rensselaer on Tuesday at a time to be determined. It will be Skidmore's first home playoff game since 2019.
  • Liv Kazanjian tallied a season high 17 saves for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Jillian Lockwood led all Skidmore players with three goals.
  • Grace deBeneditcis and Elizabeth Walsh both scored twice to account for the other Skidmore goals.
  • Maddy Marr, Gabriella Modesti, and Phoebe Ross had assists.
  • Lily Cody and Maizy Veitch both had six points for the visitors. Cody scored a game high five goals with an assist and Veitch finished with four goals and a pair of helpers.
  • Caroline Wise and Sydney Phillips both scored three times for the Bombers. Wise also finished with 12 draw controls.
  • Ella Harris had three draw controls for Skidmore and tallied three caused turnovers.
  • deBenedictis scored her second goal 33 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game at four. Ithaca got two in a 25-second span, both with a player advantage, to take the lead for good. It started a 9-1 Bomber scoring run that carried to the middle stages of the third.
  • Skidmore cut it to seven before Ithaca closed it out with the game's final six goals.
  • The Liberty League regular season champion has now finished the conference run unbeaten in five consecutive seasons.
  • The seven teams that will compete in the Liberty League Tournament are Ithaca (1), William Smith (2), Union (3), Skidmore (4), RPI (5), Rochester (6), and St. Lawrence (7).
  • Skidmore defeated its upcoming playoff opponent RPI, 12-7, back on April 10 at Wachenheim Field.
