Thoroughbreds drop both at Union to finish third in East

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team suffered 12-11 and 16-6 (8 inn.) defeats on the road at Union College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet Chargers win the series two games to one to clinch second in the Liberty League East and the right to host a crossover series next weekend.
  • Skidmore (18-14, 8-6 Liberty League, 7-5 LL East) will go to Rochester to play the second seed from the West, either University of Rochester or RIT, in a best two out of three crossover series next weekend.
  • The Yellowjackets and Tigers play a doubleheader on Sunday. RIT needs two wins to surpass Rochester.
Union 12, Skidmore 11
  • In a reversal of the events from Friday afternoon, Union overcame a lead three-run deficit to tie it in the eighth before walking it off in the ninth.
  • Caleb Miller was the hero for the Garnet Chargers. He singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
  • In the eighth, Union loaded the bases with only one out. A sacrifice fly gave the Thoroughbreds the second out while bringing in Union's ninth run. After a walk to load the bases, Sam Strazza hit a two-run infield single to tie it up.
  • Skidmore put the go ahead runs on in the top of the ninth with one out, but newly inserted reliever Kyle Patlove wiggled out of the jam.
  • Skidmore went ahead with single runs in the second and third before Union put up four. Skidmore exploded for seven runs on just four hits, including a two-RBI Zachary Leiderman single and a two-run Nick Duryea home run, in the top of the fourth to make it 9-4.
  • Union got one in the fourth and three in the fifth sandwiched by a Skidmore run in the top of the fifth and it was 10-8 Skidmore after five.
  • The Thoroughbreds added one more, an unearned tally, in the sixth that made it 11-8.
  • Duryea was 3-for-4. Leiderman had two hits and drove in three. Trey Bourque finished the first game 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs.
  • Kobe Mentzer drove in four runs for the Garnet Chargers.

Union 16, Skidmore 6 (8 inn.)
  • Skidmore jumped to a 2-0 lead almost immediately with run-scoring hits from Bourque (single) and Leiderman (double) in the first.
  • The big inning went for the hosts in the nightcap. Union plated five runs in the third and six in the seventh.
  • Union's big third was highlighted by two-run doubles from both Liam McIlroy and Kyle Zaslaw.
  • Skidmore got an unearned run in the fourth and then tied it up in the fifth on a Leiderman two-run blast after Bourque led off with a walk in the fifth.
  • The hosts answered by scoring three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Union put it out of reach with six runs on three hits including a Mentzer bases-clearing triple in the seventh and enacted the league's 10-run rule one inning later.
  • Leiderman was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI for Skidmore. For the second day in a row, he finished a triple shy of the cycle. Bourque was 2-for-3 with a walk and pair of runs.

NEXT UP: Skidmore will tune up for next weekend's crossover series with a road game at Middlebury on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
