Thoroughbreds walk off Union in 11 innings, 12-11, in dramatic series opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior Jaden Torrado drove a 1-2 pitch over the head of the drawn-in rightfielder to score the winning run from third as the Skidmore College baseball team earned a dramatic come-from-behind win over visiting Union, 12-11 in 11 innings, on Friday afternoon.
  • The bases were loaded for Torrado with one out in the 11th. It completed a six-run comeback for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Owen Roy, who scored the clinching run, led off the inning with a nine-pitch walk. Eddie Galvao singled before Andy Pelc laid down a perfect bunt for a single to load the bases with nobody out.
  • Union reliever Alex Erickson got the first out via strikeout before Torrado won it.
  • Sam Kornet hit two home runs for the Thoroughbreds. His second of the day tied the game at 11 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He hit a 2-2 line drive that just made it over the leftfield fence with Skidmore down to its final four outs.
  • Skidmore hit three home runs in total, all of them in big moments.
  • Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but it was Kornet who launched a three-run bomb in the bottom half of the inning to give Skidmore the lead.
  • Union scored each of the next seven runs (2 in the second, 3 in the third, 2 in the fourth) to take a 9-3 lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds got one closer in the fourth before plating three in the fifth, two of them on a Ewen Donald double off the wall, to pull to within two.
  • An error and a Trey Bourque half-swing single put two Skidmore runners on for Zachary Leiderman with one out in the sixth. With one swing of the bat, the Skidmore DH deposited an 0-1 offering high and over the leftfield fence to give Skidmore a 10-9 lead.
  • The Garnet Chargers answered promptly with a pair on back-to-back doubles from Kobe Mentzer and Caleb Miller to regain a one-run lead.
  • Union lefty Aidan McGee retired seven in a row before Kornet's second long ball tied it up in the eighth.
  • Aaron Kats, Skidmore's second reliver, was an out away from going three scoreless before he was touched for a pair in the seventh.
  • Thoroughbred relievers Ethan Caiazza and Christian Giresi teamed up for 4.1 scoreless innings to take it from there. Giresi got the win, his fifth, with three shutout frames of relief. He struck out two.
  • Union put the first two runners on in the ninth on Giresi. He induced a flyout before recoring both of his strikeouts in succession to keep the game tied.
  • Skidmore finished with 19 hits and had seven players record multi-hit games. Leiderman was 3-for-7 with a walk, three RBI, and three runs. Torrado finished 3-for-7 with two RBI including the winner. Nate Vandersea was 3-for-6.
  • Kornet, Donald, Bourque, and Galvao all had two hits.
  • Mentzer and Miller were both 4-for-7 to lead the way for the Garnet Chargers.
NEXT UP: Skidmore and Union will meet again Saturday in Schenectady for a doubleheader at the Central Park A-Diamond starting at 11 a.m. Skidmore needs one win to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Liberty League East and the right to host a crossover series next weekend.
