Engineers outlast Thoroughbreds on Senior Day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team hosted nationally second-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Engineers put together two substantial scoring runs on their way to defeating the Thoroughbreds 21-10 in Liberty League action. 
  • RPI, which is now 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference, scored the game's first three goals and five of the first six.
  • Charlie McFadden, who finished with a team-high three goals along with an assist, put Skidmore on the board at 6:41 of the first quarter to make it 3-1.
  • The Thoroughbreds countered the Engineers' next two goals with three of their own to pull to within 5-4.
  • Tim Blue tallied with 3:49 left in the opening frame, Charlie Kessler scored at 13:24 of the second, and Brian Gonsavles, who assisted on Blue's goal, got his team-leading 37th of the season at 10:27.
  • Two separate, uninterrupted three-goal spurts for the Engineers made it 11-4 going into halftime.
  • The visitors scored three times in 32 seconds from 6:33 to 6:01 and three more in 25 seconds from 3:46 to 3:21.
  • RPI's Luke Murphy had four of his game-high seven goals in those spans.
  • Skidmore notched the first three goals of the second half to get to within 11-7.
  • David Koffler (13:30), Caleb Lawson (12:15), and Matthew Pinckney (10:28) each found of the back of the net.
  • Rensselaer scored twice before McFadden registered another at 9:16
  • The visitors answered with eight straight to make it 21-8 with 5:53 left in regulation.
  • McFadden scored his 32nd of the year and then assisted on a marker from Gonsalves with 4:50 to play to conclude the scoring.
  • Gonsalves had six points (2 goals, 4 assists) with three ground balls.
  • McFadden also had three pickups and Kyle Goodwin had a team-high five.
  • Marty McFadden had two ground balls and a game-best five caused turnovers.
  • Avery Stamps made 18 saves and Cameron Shipman stopped two shots.
  • Joseph Perry earned the win with 10 saves.
  • RPI got multiple points from nine players, including Angelo Venuto, who had a goal, five assists, and 19 ground balls while winning 22 of 27 faceoffs.
  • The Engineers held the edge in faceoffs (24 of 34) and ground balls (55-30).
  • The shot differential went to RPI (65-41) as did the shots on goal (41-20).
  • Clears were 21 of 25 for the visitors and 20 of 26 for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Skidmore is now 9-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.
  • Following the game, Skidmore recognized its 10 seniors: Avery Stamps, JJ Jablonowski, Charlie Kessler, John Sveen, Matthew Pinckney, Brandon Reilly, Charlie Murphy, Jack Fitzpatrick, Gabriel Sgambettera, and Charlie McFadden.
NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds close out the regular season on Saturday at conference foe Ithaca College. Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon.
