SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Cobleskill scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings and shut out the Skidmore College baseball team in its final two at bats to pick up a 9-6 non-conference win on Tuesday. The game was halted after eight innings due to darkness.
- Despite the start time getting moved up from the original 4 p.m. scheduled start, it took three hours and 29 minutes to get through eight innings when the contest was called.
- Both teams used seven pitchers in eight innings. Ryan Lansing got the win for Cobleskill. He slithered out of a jam in the sixth by striking out a pair of Skidmore hitters with two runners in scoring position.
- Skidmore left 12 runners on base including the bases loaded in the second and sixth.
- Cobleskill took the lead, 7-6, with two in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Sam Gutierrez legged out an infield single with runners on second-and-third to tie the game at six. Three batters later, Zach Papanikolatos worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Fighting Tigers ahead.
- Skidmore placed the leadoff runner on base in both the seventh and eighth but was unable to advance a runner past second.
- RBI singles from David Flora and Gutierrez in the eighth for Cobleskill completed the scoring.
- Cobleskill scored in each of its first three innings including two each in the second and third to take a 5-1 lead.
- The Thoroughbreds answered with three runs in the fourth to pull to within one and two in the sixth to briefly take the lead.
- Each of Skidmore's three runs in the fourth were unearned with the help from a pair of Cobleskill errors. Jaden Torrado had a sacrifice fly in the frame, and Trey Bourque singled in Shaw Pedemonti, who stole second after reaching on an error earlier that scored Skidmore's third run.
- Skidmore sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth but settled for two runs despite taking the lead. Bourque hit his second run-scoring hit in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
- Bourque finished the game 2-for-5. Owen Roy and Mac Cady were both also 2-for-5.
- Ethan Caiazza kept Skidmore in it was 3.2 innings of near-perfect relief. He allowed just two hits while striking out three batters and pitched around a two-out double in the sixth followed by a wild pitch to strand the runner at third.
- Cobleskill leadoff hitter Zach Ducorsky was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. He led off the game with a triple and came around to score to draw first blood.
- Cobleskill is 4-15 while Skidmore drops to 10-8.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will play a three-game weekend series against division foe Vassar this weekend. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. in Poughkeepsie before a doubleheader Saturday starting at 12 p.m. at the Castle Diamond.
