Skidmore shrugs off late surging St. Lawrence 10-9

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team held off a fourth-quarter push from visiting St. Lawrence for a 10-9 Liberty League win on Friday afternoon.
  • St. Lawrence scored three out of four and four out of six to get to within a goal with 2:34 remaining. A Thoroughbred turnover gave the Saints a chance to tie it with a possession starting with 1:27 left. Shortly after the successful clear, a SLU pass sailed over the head of the intended target and out of bounds.
  • After a Skidmore timeout, Lara Strunk weaved through multiple defenders to clear it for Thoroughbred clear before dishing it to Gabriella Modesti to run out the remainder of the clock.
  • Skidmore improves to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, which is tied with RPI for fifth and just a half-game behind Rochester. Skidmore can clinch a spot in the seven-team playoff tournament as soon as Saturday.
  • St. Lawrence is 3-10 and 2-5.
  • Jillian Lockwood led Skidmore in goals with three.
  • Maddy Marr had a game high four points with two goals and two assists. She also caused two turnovers and had a pair of ground balls.
  • Lily Schwartzman also scored twice and tallied a team high five ground balls.
  • Modesti had a goal and an assist while Grace deBenedictis and Allison Brewer both scored on free positions for the victorious Thoroughbreds.
  • Maeve McKinley had the other Skidmore assist. She also had four draw controls to lead either side.
  • Liv Kazanjian turned away five shots for her sixth win of the campaign.
  • Caroline Hamilton scored three times for the guests. Keira Dodd had two.
  • Courtney Lynn kept the Saints in it with 12 saves, including 10 in the first half.
  • Skidmore walked away with a dominant 15-5 edge in draw controls.
  • The game was tied at three at the end of the first quarter before Skidmore earned a 2-1 advantage in the second quarter and a one-goal halftime lead. Skidmore surrendered just one goal in periods two and three. It was 7-5 after three. Skidmore led 8-5 and 9-6 before St. Lawrence came storming back.
NEXT UP: Skidmore, winners of three in a row, will go for the weekend sweep on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it plays host to Clarkson for the program's Alumni Appreciation Game.
