Thoroughbreds stumble at Vassar 10-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team traveled south to face Vassar College in a critical Liberty League contest and the Thoroughbreds suffered a 10-7 setback. Skidmore is now 9-5 and 1-4 in the conference while the Brewers are 9-4 and 2-3.

  • Following 6:55 of scoreless action, the Thoroughbreds took advantage of their second man-up opportunity when senior Charlie McFadden found the back of the cage.
  • Vassar tied the score at the 5:55 mark and then won the ensuing faceoff, though its bid for a second goal was denied by senior goalkeeper Avery Stamps.
  • Skidmore cleared successfully and broke the tie with a goal out of the stick of David Muti with just under four minutes left in the first quarter.
  • McFadden needed 42 seconds to make it 3-1 when he notched his 28th of the year. Brian Gonsalves picked up his second assist of the game.
  • The second quarter featured four goals - all by the Brewers, who led 5-3 at halftime.
  • Vassar had a 17-8 advantage in ground balls in the second frame, which led to a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Caleb Lawson came out 30 seconds into the third quarter to pull the Thoroughbreds to within 5-4 with his 17th goal of the campaign.
  • Two possessions later, Gonsalves found McFadden for the tying goal.
  • A man-up goal and an even-strength tally only 1:01 apart put Vassar back up by two, 7-5.
  • Tim Blue scored man-up off a feed from McFadden at the 8:40 mark to get Skidmore to make the margin one.
  • Trailing 10-6 with under a minute to play in regulation, Nicolo Mazzocca notched the final goal for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Stamps, a senior, finished with 14 saves and McFadden had five points (3 goals, 2 assists).
  • Two players had four points for the Brewers, who got 11 saves from Drew Quinn.
  • Vassar won 15 of 20 face offs and held a 41-31 edge in ground balls.
