SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team was tied with nationally seventh-ranked Union College at halftime (5-5), but the Garnet Chargers scored the first seven goals of the second half and defeated the Thoroughbreds 15-8 in a Liberty League showdown.
- Union opened the game with three straight goals with the first coming 1:04 into the action and the other two just 1:28 apart past the midway point.
- The Thoroughbreds got on the board with 3:33 left in the first when junior Brian Gonsalves tallied his team-leading 33rd of the season.
- The Garnet Chargers scored the final goal of the opening frame, but Skidmore grabbed the momentum in the second to tie the game at 4-4.
- Senior Charlie Kessler scored twice with Nicolo Mazzocca, a junior, getting one in between. Gonsalves had assists on both of Kessler's goals with the second one coming man-up.
- Trailing by a goal in the waning seconds of the half, Gonsalves potted his second of the evening with only one second left before the intermission.
- Union took over in the second half, scoring seven straight for a 12-5 advantage. Three goals came in the third quarter with the next four in the fourth. Michael Shaw had three tallies and Peter Kip scored twice.
- Gonsalves ended the string with an unassisted goal with 10:32 to play in regulation and sophomore Caleb Lawson scored his 16th of the season to make it 12-7.
- Union got them right back within an 18-second span to go ahead by seven.
- Gonsalves finished the scoring with his fourth of the contest.
- Kyle Goodwin had a team-best five ground balls in the loss, which saw Avery Stamps record 12 saves.
- Union's Dan Donahue stopped nine shots and Matthew Paolatto registered 16 ground balls. He won 20 of 23 faceoffs. Kip finished with six points (3 goals, 3 assists).
- Skidmore was 22 of 23 on clear attempts with the Garnet Chargers going 27 of 28.
- The Thoroughbreds drop to 9-4 and 1-3, while Union is now 9-2 and 3-1.
UP NEXT: Skidmore visits Liberty League foe Vassar College on Saturday at 3 p.m. It is the fifth straight conference contest for the Thoroughbreds.
