Thoroughbreds walk off Castleton on 9th-inning sac fly

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Nate Vandersea hit a full-count pitch to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to give the Skidmore College baseball team a 5-4 walk-off win over Vermont State University Castleton on Monday afternoon.
  • Skidmore loaded the bases with one out leading way to Vandersea's clinching plate appearance. Eddie Galvao walked on five pitches to open the inning and moved to second on an Owen Roy sacrifice bunt. Nick Duryea laced a single to right to put runners on the corner and Andy Pelc was intentionally walked to set the stage.
  • Before coming through in the ninth, Skidmore left 12 runners on base including as bases-loaded spot in the fifth. Back-to-back errors in the eighth gave Skidmore runners on first-and-second with nobody out. Trey Bourque bunted the runners over before Castleton reliever Joseph Voli wiggled out of it.
  • Castleton tied the game at four with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Turner Clews drove in the Spartans' third run on an RBI ground out in the seventh. In the eighth, Jack Boyle singled through the five-six hole with two outs and two strikes to tie the game at four.
  • Christian Giresi retired all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth to earn his second win of the year.
  • Skidmore starter Ethan Barnett retired 11 out of the first 12 batters he faced but was tagged for a one-out solo homer to centerfield to Castleton's Jared Maher.
  • Skidmore took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair. Sam Kornet singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and scored on a Shaw Pedemonti double. Roy, who stopped at third on Pedemonti's RBI double, scored two batters later on a Vandersea infield single.
  • Pedemonti was Skidmore's only player with a multi-hit game. He was 2-for-4. Skidmore had 10 hits from nine different players.
  • Castleton tied it at two in the fifth. The home-run hitter Maher got plunked, went to second on a wild pitch, but was unable to score on a Clews double after stumbling around third. The Spartans settled for one run on a Mikey Raby Jr. RBI ground out.
  • Ewen Donald doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth leading to an error and a Bourque double off the base of the wall to give Skidmore a 4-2 lead.
  • Skidmore improves to 10-7 on the year. Castleton is 2-18 with five one-run losses.
