Thoroughbreds stumble at Westfield, 17-13

WESTFIELD, Mass.—Westfield State overcame an early 4-2 Skidmore lead with a 6-0 second quarter run on the way to a 17-13 non-league women's lacrosse win Thursday evening. The Thoroughbreds are 0-4, while the Owls are 2-0.
  • Gabriella Modesti and Jillian Lockwood scored four goals each to lead Skidmore. Modesti added a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls. Julia Cafasso scored three goals and had an assist, two ground balls and six draw controls.
  • Megan Bailey paced Westfield with five goals.
  • Skidmore started quickly going up 3-0 in the first 3:23 on goals from Lockwood, Modesti and Lily Schwartzman. The teams traded goals before Westfield ran off seven straight to end the half up 8-4.
  • The Owls extended the lead to 14-8 after three, but the Thoroughbreds mounted a comeback in the fourth when Phoebe Ross and Modesti scored the first two goals of the stanza to get it to 14-10. Skidmore wasn't able to close the gap before the 17-13 final.
  • The Thoroughbreds had a 24-10 draw advantage and converted 5-of-7 free position attempts, including 5-for-5 in the second half. Skidmore out shot the Owls 38-31. Isabella Iannone had six saves for the Thoroughbreds.
