Skidmore turned away by #4 St. Lawrence in league opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The game was tied in the middle of the second quarter before nationally fourth-ranked St. Lawrence went on a 9-1 scoring run to defeat the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team, 14-6, on Sunday afternoon.
  • Brian Gonsalves led the way for the Thoroughbreds. He scored four out of the team's six goals and had an assist on one of the other two.
  • Charlie McFadden and Ryan Connolly scored the other Skidmore goals.
  • It was the conference opener for both teams. The game was pushed from Saturday to Sunday and delayed by over an hour and a half to clear the field after a snowstorm brought nearly a foot of snow in addition to rain to the area Friday night through Saturday evening.
  • SLU remains unbeaten at 9-0. Skidmore is 8-2.
  • Ben Hutchinson scored six goals and had an assist for seven points to lead the Saints. Judge Murphy finished with three goals and two assists.
  • Both goalies had strong performances. Michael Marinello had 12 saves in the win for SLU. Avery Stamps made 14 saves for Skidmore.
  • The fast-paced start saw four goals, two by each team, in the first 4:29 of the game. It remained tied at two after the first period and was 3-3 when Gonsalves got his third with 9:17 left in the half.
  • The Saints rolled off the final four goals of the second quarter. Skidmore cut it to three on Gonsalves' fourth at 5:28 of the third period, but SLU ended the stanza with four unanswered and then got another early in the fourth to stretch its lead to 12-4. Both teams scored twice the rest of the way.
  • Led by Paddy Condon (13-6), St. Lawrence won 16-of-23 faceoffs leading to a 50-32 edge in shots. The Saints also won the ground ball battle 48-26.
  • Jude Avelino Jr. and Marty McFadden both had four ground balls to lead Skidmore defensively.
