Thoroughbreds come up short in seesaw battle with Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Alyssa Gorny's tiebreaking goal with 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter stuck as Rochester defeated the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team 12-11 in a game played at RIT on Saturday.

  • UofR scored four out of the game's final five goals to erase a two-goal deficit and grab the win.
  • Elizabeth Walsh scored for Skidmore to tie the game back up at 11 with 5:05 left. It remained that way until Gorny scored the winner on Rochester's second of back-to-back free positions.
  • Rochester (4-2, 1-1 Liberty League) won the draw after scoring the go-ahead goal but turned it over after controlling the ball for just over a minute. Skidmore was unable to bring the ball into the offensive area as a failed clear gave the 'Jackets the chance to run out the clock.
  • Gabriella Modesti and Julia Cafasso both scored twice for Skidmore (3-5, 1-1 Liberty League).
  • Phoebe Ross had five assists and now has 13 in her past three games.
  • Seven other players scored for Skidmore: Maeve McKinley, Lily Hudner, Maddy Marr, Lily Schwartzman, Tessa Snyder, Jillian Lockwood, and Walsh.
  • Liv Kazanjian made nine saves.
  • Gorny had three goals and three assists to lead the way for the Yellowjackets. Gracie Giannettino had three goals and one helper, and Ava Saffren finished with 10 saves.
  • Rochester scored five out of the game's first six goals before a 5-0 second half gave the Thoroughbreds a 6-5 halftime lead. Rochester pounced back with a 3-1 third before the strong finish after Skidmore cored three straight in the first 3:22 of the fourth quarter to take a 10-8 lead.
  • Team stats were nearly equal across the board excluding free-position chances. Rochester was 3-for-8. Skidmore scored twice in three opportunities.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will go to Vassar in a midweek contest on Wednesday, March 27.
