Thoroughbreds match program-best start with fifth straight victory, 19-9, over Oswego

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 for just the second time in program history with a 19-9 win over visiting Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.
  • Skidmore last won its first five games in 2000. After losing the first game in 2005, Skidmore won its next six which is the program's win streak record. The Thoroughbreds have a chance to match it next time out.
  • The Thoroughbreds held their opponent to under 10 goals for the fourth time in five games. Skidmore allowed 10 goals just once: an 11-10 OT win over Bates last Sunday.
  • Nicolo Mazzocca led the way for Skidmore over the Lakers with five goals and an assist for six points. He also caused two turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
  • Brian Gonsalves and Charlie McFadden both had three points on two goals and one assist. Gonsalves caused four turnovers with two ground balls, while McFadden had five ground balls.
  • Kyle Goodwin led all players with seven ground balls for the Thoroughbreds. He also caused one turnover and scored his first goal of the year.
  • In all, 12 different players found the back of the net for Skidmore.
  • David Muti had two. Jon Bouvier, Charlie Kessler, and Shane Spinale each had one goal and one assist.
  • Other goals were scored by David Koffler, Caleb Lawson, Ryan Connolly, and Jack Doherty.
  • Jack Fitzpatrick, Marty McFadden, and Jimmy Gibbons each had one assist. Fitzpatrick went 18-5 in the faceoff circle, while McFadden finished with six ground balls, and one caused turnover.
  • Avery Stamps improved to 5-0 in Skidmore's net with 10 saves in three periods of work. Cameron Shipman and Ethan Pham both had one save in relief.
  • For the Lakers, Liam Sexton led with three goals. Hayden Coney finished with two goals and two assists, and Garrett Elston had two goals and one assist.
  • Seamus Hand made 18 saves in the effort for the visitors.
  • Oswego scored the game's first two goals separated by 38 seconds. Skidmore punched back, scoring three in a 62-second span to launch a 10-1 scoring run and a 10-3 lead. It was 11-5 Skidmore at the half.
  • Skidmore allowed no more than three goals in any single period, including just two in the second, third, and fourth quarters. The Thoroughbreds added eight in the second half for the 19-9 final.
  • Skidmore scored twice man up and finished 2-for-4 on extra man opportunities. Oswego was 1-for-5.
  • The Thoroughbreds finished with a 57-37 edge in shots, went 23-of-27 clearing the ball, and had a 60-35 advantage in ground balls. Faceoffs finished 21-11 Skidmore.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will play its next four games away from home starting Wednesday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at Trinity College.
