Huskies turn back Thoroughbreds, 4-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The 11th ranked Skidmore College hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Southern Maine in New England Hockey Conference action Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink. The loss leaves the Thoroughbreds at 16-5-2 overall and 11-4-1 in NEHC play. The Huskies move into playoff contention with an 8-12-3 overall and 5-8-3 league mark.
  • Kaeden Patrick got the full house into the game early when he scored off a rebound from a Jacob Zwirecki shot at 4:42. It was his team-high 12th goal of the year. Everett Wardle had the second assist. USM evened the score on John Hagen's short-handed goal at 8:34. It was only the second short tally against the Thoroughbreds this season.
  • Skidmore retook the lead at 5:58 of the second on another rebound score. This time it was Mason Beecher picking up his second goal of the season from Jaden York and Nick Cozzi. USM tied it at on Jakub Suran's goal at 7:25 and then went in front on Etham MacDuff's score at 10:37.
  • Matt Sullivan hit the insurance goal for the Huskies at 11:51 of the third.
  • Skidmore had a 43-27 shot advantage. Tate Brandon stopped 23 shots, while Mason Palmer had 41 saves, including 15 in the third period for USM.
  • It was the final regular season home game for the Thoroughbreds who will host an NEHC Quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Feb. 10. The team travels to Elmira (Feb. 9) and Hobart (Feb. 10) to close out the regular season.
