Thoroughbreds dominate second half for 12-9 opening win at Emerson

BOSTON – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team outscored host Emerson College 5-0 in the third quarter and 8-3 in the second half for a 12-9 win over the Lions to open the season on Thursday.
 
  • The Thoroughbreds, trailing 6-4 at the half, scored six unanswered goals and held off a fourth quarter Emerson surge for the win.
  • Skidmore had a four-goal lead, 10-6, when Emerson scored three straight to get to within one. Skidmore scored the final two goals in the last 2:35 for the 12-9 final.
  • Brian Gonsalves led all players in the game with five goals. He also had an assist to finish with six points.
  • Charlie Kessler and Charlie McFadden both scored twice. McFadden also registered an assist and picked up six ground balls.
  • Other Skidmore goals were scored by Matthew Pinckney, Tim Blue, and Nicolo Mazzocca.
  • Jon Bouvier had three assists. Caleb Lawson and David Koffler both had one.
  • Avery Stamps stopped 11 shots in his first career start for Skidmore.
  • Charlie Murphy spearheaded the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Skidmore dominated the faceoff circle and finished with an 18-7 edge. Matt Terrana won 13-of-17, and Dimitri Sfakiyanudis was 4-for-7.
  • The Thoroughbreds were 1-for-3 with the extra man and did not allow a goal in two Emerson extra-man chances.
  • Birk Swan had four goals and two assists to lead Emerson. Jack Burns scored three times and had one helper.
