RUTLAND, Vt. – Senior defenseman
Danny Magnuson scored two goals and set up two others, including
Zach Lindewirth's late game-winner, to lead the Skidmore College men's hockey team to a 5-4 win at Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon. The victory secures the weekend sweep for the Thoroughbreds over the Spartans.
- Skidmore, ranked 12th nationally, improves to 5-2 overall and 4-2 (12 points) in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC).
- Castleton is 0-7-1 and 0-5 with one point in the conference.
- Magnuson's goals were the first of the season for the 2024 All-American. His second put Skidmore ahead 4-3 until the Spartans tied it at four with 3:49 remaining in regulation.
- Skidmore came back with the go-ahead goal just 23 seconds after Castleton tied it. Magnuson had the primary assist on the goal by Lindewirth, whose second tally of the year is his first game-winner since Nov. 5, 2022.
- Castleton made it tough just one day after Skidmore won 7-1 in the same building. The Thoroughbreds were ahead 3-1 in the third period when Luke Chakrabarti scored his second and third goals of the night to tie it up and secure the hat trick for the hosts.
- Jackson Edwards scored the other one for Castleton, which tied it at four late in the third.
- After a scoreless first period, Ryan Waltman scored from Evan Brown and Magnuson on the power play to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead at 5:42 of the second. Waltman later assisted to finish with a pair of points.
- Chakrabarti notched his first at 12:18 to tie it up.
- Magnuson then scored his first goal with 6:26 left in the middle period to send the Thoroughbreds into the second intermission up a goal. Coleman Jenkins and Scott Lagos assisted.
- Jenkins and Lagos both picked up their second point of the afternoon when Lagos scored on a feed from Jenkins, making it 3-1 two minutes into the third.
- Kevin Urquhart and Jack Strauss had the helpers on Magnuson's second goal.
- Joshua Seeley made 31 saves, a season and career high, to finish the weekend with 57 stops.
- Dominic Rodrigue had 34 saves for the hosts.
- Skidmore finished 1-for-3 on power plays and killed all three of Castleton's power-play opportunities.
- The Thoroughbreds won 40-of-72 (55.6 percent) faceoffs, led by Waltman, who went 13-8.
