No. 12 Skidmore drops tournament opener, 5-4, to Lake Forest

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team was unable to complete a late third-period comeback on Saturday afternoon as it fell to Lake Forest College, 5-4, in the opening game of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational.
  • The Thoroughbreds faced deficits of 2-0, 3-1, and 5-3 in the contest and were ultimately unable to net the late equalizer.
  • Zach Lindewirth scored the first two goals for 12th-ranked Skidmore (5-3).
  • Zach Frisk and Cooper Rice accounted for the other two goals. They both also had assists.
  • Mitchell Floccare, Danny Magnuson, Stephen Perez, Jaden York, Kaeden Patrick, and Jack Strauss all added assists in the effort for Skidmore.
  • The Foresters had goals from five different players. Justin Ross led with a goal and an assist. Jared Gerger had two assists.
  • Lake Forest (3-5-1) scored on its first shot on goal of the game. Colin Bella had it on a rush.
  • The Foresters doubled the least at 11:09 of the first on the power play. Ross collected the puck after his first shot was blocked and fired it past Joshua Seeley in goal.
  • Lindewirth scored his first less than a minute later after York's shot from in tight was stopped by Bobby McCloskey.
  • Lake Forest completed the four-goal first period and took a 3-1 lead at 14:51 on a Hayden Riva unassisted goal.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored goals less than four minutes apart in the middle of the second period to knot things up at three. Lindewirth popped his second of the day just past the midway point of the period on a rush when he got open on the right wing and fired the wrister in. Then, Rice scored from the top of the crease following passes from Frisk and Perez leaving the net open at 13:51.
  • It took just 19 seconds for Lake Forest to get the lead back and it added another with 2:32 left in the period to make it 5-3. Tyler Buonopane notched the fourth goal for the visitors before Qaritaq Kusugak-Clark scored what proved to be the game winner.
  • There were four goals scored in both the first and second periods.
  • Frisk cut through the middle and scored over the blocker to cut the deficit to one, 5-4, with 3:06 remaining in the third.
  • Lake Forest went to the penalty kill with 1:10 left just a few seconds after a shot from its own end to the empty Thoroughbred net hit the post. Skidmore took one shot on goal in its last-ditch effort to tie it up, but the Foresters cleared the zone one last time on the 6-on-4 to ice it.
  • Skidmore finished with a 36-25 edge in shot. McCloskey had 32 saves, while Seeley finished with 20.
  • The Thoroughbreds went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Forsters scored one in two chances.
  • Skidmore had a lopsided 35-18 margin in faceoffs. Ryan Waltman went 13-3.
