No. 12 Skidmore explodes for four in the first, beats Castleton 7-1 for Hutchison’s 100th win

RUTLAND, Vt. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team scored four times in the first period on the way to a 7-1 victory at Vermont State University Castleton on Friday night. The win is the 100th in the coaching career of Rob Hutchison '07, making him the second coach in program history to reach the milestone.
  • The Thoroughbreds used goals from seven different players 13 different players registered points on the night.
  • Brandon Spaulding and Coleman Jenkins both had their first-career goals and both also registered assists. Freddie Ilias also finished with a goal and an assist. Cooper Rice, Zach Lindewirth, and Mitchell Floccare each also finished with two points all with a pair of assists.
  • Joshua Seeley turned aside a career-high 26 shots to improve his record to 4-1 between the pipes for Skidmore.
  • Skidmore is 4-2 on the year and 3-2 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC).
  • Castleton is 0-6-1 and 0-5.
  • With the victory, Skidmore improves 9-1-2 against the Spartans since 2018.
  • Hutchison joins Paul Dion in Skidmore's 100-win club. Dion retired with 213 victories over his 23-season career behind the Thoroughbred bench.
  • Skidmore scored twice in the first 3:18 of the contest and again four minutes later to take an early 3-0 lead. Spaulding scored his first, from Jenkins and Sam Saccone, to put Skidmore ahead just 2:16 in. Ryan Waltman got the second from Danny Magnuson and Rice, a Rutland native, just 62 second later. Will Dow-Kenny then notched his second goal of the year assisted by Lindewirth at 7:12.
  • Castleton answered with its lone goal at 9:40 0f the first to briefly cut the deficit back to two. Luke Chakrabarti got it from Emmett McHardy.
  • Skidmore completed the action-packed first period with its fourth goal at 13:03 to make it 4-1. Kaeden Patrick scored it on assists from Evan Brown and Lindewirth.
  • The Thoroughbreds completed the scoring with a goal with 2:19 left in the second followed by two more in the third for the 7-1 final.
  • Captain Jack Strauss scored his first goal of the season for Skidmore's fifth goal in the second period. Floccare picked up the assist.
  • Then, on the power play, Freddie Ilias scored from Jenkins and Rice. Jenkins then got his first-career goal two minutes later to complete the scoring. Ilias and Scott Lagos had the helpers.
  • Skidmore dominated special teams, going 2-for-3 on the power play while holding Castleton scoreless in four PP chances. Seeley made eight saves on Thoroughbred penalty kills.

  • Skidmore and Castleton will meet again in Rutland tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the final regular-season conference game between the two programs.
