Elmira completes weekend sweep over No. 7 Skidmore

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team fell to Elmira College 5-1 on Saturday evening in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) matchup at the Murray Athletic Center. The Thoroughbreds dropped to 3-2 (2-2 NEHC), while Elmira improved to 4-1-1 (4-0 NEHC) after the weekend sweep of Skidmore.
  • Elmira jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Nathan Young at 10:01 and Ryan Reifler on the power play at 16:00.
  • The Soaring Eagles extended their advantage in the second period with a power-play goal by Cole Tucker at 12:33 and an even-strength tally by Eric Bertlesen at 18:51, taking a commanding 4-0 lead into the final frame.
  • Tucker finished with a goal and assist. Chance Gorman recorded a pair of helpers.
  • Skidmore, ranked seventh nationally, got on the board in the third period at 14:40, as Scott Lagos scored his first goal of the season off a feed from Danny Magnuson.
  • Elmira sealed the victory with Young's second goal of the game, an empty-netter at 17:46.
  • The Soaring Eagles capitalized on special teams, going 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Thoroughbreds went 0-for-3.
  • Skidmore finished with a 31-23 edge in shots. Magnuson and Coleman Jenkins both had four shots.
  • Skidmore's Blaine Moore started in goal and made nine saves on 12 shots before being replaced by Tommy Aitken midway through the second period. Aitken stopped 9-of-10 shots in relief.
  • Elmira's Brody Haynes made 30 saves for the Soaring Eagles, earning the win in net.
