Thoroughbreds drop hard-fought battle at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team fell in four sets (17-25, 27-29, 25-20, 17-25) at Union on Saturday afternoon.
  • Skidmore finishes the weekend 1-1 and stands at 6-12 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League.
  • It was Union's first league match. The Garnet Chargers are 12-4.
  • Natalie Pedersen had 15 kills to lead Skidmore in the match.
  • Maya Stolarz and Jazlin Chen both had nine kills, and Angie Mozrall and Rudi Reyes each tallied eight.
  • Chen also finished with a game high five blocks, one solo, two aces, and three digs.
  • Catriona Hoelperl racked up 40 assists with eight digs and four aces.
  • Athena Braverman had three aces to go with 21 digs.
  • Union was paced by Shannon McGrath with 17 kills and 14 digs. Shelby McKim had 13 kills on 20 swings and a .500 swing percentage.
  • Union hit .315 as a team after settling in the .360s in each of the first two sets.
  • Skidmore finished at .227.
  • Union jolted to a 21-14 lead in the first set. Skidmore got three out of four points to pull within five before the hosts scored the final three points to grab the set.
  • The wild second game featured eight ties and five lead changes. Skidmore had two set points (25-24, 27-26) separated by a Union set point (25-24) before it was eventually settled.
  • Back-to-back Chen kills made it 27-26 Skidmore. Then, McGrath took over for the hosts with a kill on each of the final three plays of the set to give Union the 2-0 lead.
  • Skidmore scored 6-of-7 to take an 11-8 lead in the third. Then, the Thoroughbreds went on a 7-2 run to take a commanding eight-point lead. Union made a push to make it a two-point difference, but two Stolarz kills sandwiched by a Hoelperl ace put the set away for Skidmore.
  • Skidmore tried to play catch up in the fourth but ran out of runway. Skidmore trailed by three, 17-14, when the hosts scored five out of the next six points making it 22-15.
  • Skidmore's lead in the all-time series was cut to 51-45. Neither team has won two years in nearly a decade.

  • Skidmore will play at Clarkson next Saturday, Oct. 12 followed by a non-conference match against SUNY Potsdam.
