Thoroughbreds outduel Golden Knights for first time in dozen years

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Breaking a streak of 15 consecutive losses to the Golden Knights, the Skidmore College volleyball team defeated Clarkson for the first time since 2012 with a victory in four sets (16-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19) on Saturday. Later, Skidmore went across town and swept SUNY Potsdam (25-19, 25-20, 29-27).
 
Skidmore ends the day with a season record of 8-12. The Thoroughbreds are 2-3 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is right in the playoff picture, currently fifth, with three matches to go.
 
Skidmore 3, Clarkson 1
  • Skidmore dropped the first set to the Golden Knights before storming back to win the next three and the match.
  • Skidmore had a pair of players with nine kills and one with 10. Natalie Pedersen was the leader. She hit .286 and had four digs.
  • Angie Mozrall and Jazlin Chen both finished with nine kills. Mozrall did not commit an attack error on 23 swings to finish with a .391 percentage. Chen had three blocks, one solo, and four digs.
  • Cationa Hoelperl (24 assists, two aces) and Tiffany Flores (16 assists, three aces) combined for 40 out of the team's 42 assists and five out of 10 service aces.
  • Athena Braverman finished with 17 digs. Hoelperl and Madison Manning both tallied 12.
  • Grace Hanson finished with 15 kills to lead the host Golden Knights. Marin Hangliter had 13.
  • Clarkson (7-12, 1-3 Liberty League) outscored Skidmore 11-3 in the middle of the first set to get a 20-12 lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds grabbed and held the lead in the second. Four unanswered points to end it gave the 11-point margin.
  • Clarkson led until the middle of the third set, when Skidmore scored five straight to take a 15-12 lead. Points went back-and-forth until a 4-1 Skidmore run made it 21-17.
  • The hosts jumped to a seven-point lead, 13-6, in the fourth. Then, Skidmore scored six straight points to pull to within one only to later score seven unanswered to lead 20-15. The whole run saw Skidmore score 14 out of 16 points. A short time later, Skidmore got to match point and on match point No. 2, Pedersen put down a kill to end it. 
 
Skidmore 3, Potsdam 0
  • Across the Raquette River, Skidmore completed the 2-0 day with a sweep of the Bears.
  • Chen led with 12 kills on 26 swings and just three errors for a .346 percentage. She also had five more stuffs including three solo blocks.
  • Mozrall had nine kills for the second match in a row, and Maya Stolarz put down eight.
  • Hoelperl added 20 more assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the afternoon.
  • Emma Ferrigno had 13 assists. Athena Braverman had seven to go along with 14 digs.
  • Alyssa Adams led Potsdam all-around with nine kills, two aces, three blocks, and 10 digs.
  • After winning the first, Skidmore faced a challenge in the second set. Potsdam (8-7) battled back to tie it at 20, but Skidmore claimed the last five points for a 25-20 win.
  • The marathon third set saw 13 ties and seven lead changes before the Thoroughbreds finally put the finishing touches on the sweep.

  • Skidmore will play its final two home games of the season next week when it hosts Castleton on Wednesday and William Smith on Saturday.
