Thoroughbreds shut out Engineers for first conference victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team returned to its winning ways after shutting out RPI, 4-0, for a pivotal first conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (5-6, 1-1 Liberty League) offense made up for a recent scoring drought by scoring the third most goals in a single game all season after outshooting the Engineers (5-5, 0-1 Liberty League) by a 20-to-9 margin and holding an 11-to-8 penalty corners advantage. Skidmore has now also won 20 of the last 23 matchups against RPI in the series history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a quiet first period that saw three combined shot attempts, Skidmore struck first halfway into the second quarter on an Ella Costa shot from just inside the right side of the shooting circle on a penalty corner.
  • The score gave the Thoroughbreds the lead heading into halftime, with the home team holding a 7-to-2 edge in shots and 6-to-3 lead on penalty corner chances.
  • The Thoroughbreds broke the game open in the third quarter on a pair of scores from senior CC Wetter and sophomore Colby Paul. Wetter struck first just 62 seconds into the half on a penalty corner that saw her receive a pass in traffic and muscling the ball through a crowd of defenders into the back of the goal.
  • Paul's score came nine minutes later in the 41st after receiving a pass in transition by senior Kayla Hassett from the right side to put Skidmore up 3-0.
  • Skidmore put the finishing touches to a lopsided shutout when freshman Emma Houff swung in the fourth goal of the game on a transitional pass from junior Abby Ezickson.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Costa and Houff's goals each represented the first in their collegiate careers.
  • Wetter and Hassett each placed four shots on goal.
  • Bodnar won her 25th career game after recording four saves
  • Senior Gillian Maher made a key defensive save in the third quarter to keep RPI off the board.
