SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – A career offensive game from sophomore
Colby Paul helped the Skidmore College field hockey team cruise past SUNY Oneonta for a lopsided 4-1 victory at Wagner Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Paul finished with the first hat trick of her career after recording three goals alongside an assist, effectively accounting for all Thoroughbreds (6-6) scores as the home team outshot the Red Dragons (6-5) by an 18-to-10 margin
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Paul's first goal came in just the fourth minute of the game after receiving a pass from junior Abby Ezickson in transition that left Oneonta's defense out of position.
- In the 32nd minute, just 1:25 into the second half, Paul struck once again, this time on a penalty stroke that saw her blow the ball past Oneonta's goalie and find the left side of the goal.
- The Red Dragons responded with their first goal of the match just 30 seconds later to cut Skidmore's lead to just one score.
- In the 49th minute, senior CC Wetter pushed the Thoroughbreds lead back to two goals after scoring off an assist from Paul. Sophomore Erin Ohlenbusch started the scoring sequence with a brilliant cross pass downfield that found Paul in the shooting circle.
- Oneonta had a golden opportunity to cut Skidmore's lead back down to a lone score in the 55th minute after being gifted a penalty stroke, but was shut down by senior goalie Victoria Bodnar for the stop.
- Paul put the finishing touches to her hat trick in the 57th minute on an assist from senior Kayla Hassett.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
- Paul finished with all five shots being on goal to go with her hat trick and assist
- Alongside her penalty stroke stop, Bodnar finished with eight saves on the day for her 26th career win. She is now tied with Katie Crupi for fifth all time in Skidmore program history in wins.
- Wetter's goal marks the 38th in her career and pushes her to 18th all time in school history.
- Hassett's assist is the 22nd of her career and moves her to being tied for 17th all-time in program history.
- Ezickson's assist is her fifth on the year.
