Skidmore comeback bid falls just short against Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss to Vassar on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (6-7, 1-2 Liberty League) fell behind early and simply ran out of time late against the Brewers (3-10, 1-2 Liberty League) as a Mia Angwin goal with 18 seconds remaining proved too little too late. The final score did not represent the story for most of the match, as Skidmore outshot the home team 12-to-6 and holding an 8-to-3 penalty corners advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar struck first in just the sixth minute of the game to put the Thoroughbreds in an early 1-0 deficit.
  • The Thoroughbreds offense put on the pressure in the second period, putting up six unanswered shot attempts while generating three penalty corners in an effort to tie things up. However, a strong defensive effort from the Brewers backline kept Skidmore off the scoreboard.
  • In the 42nd minute, the Brewers struck once again with the insurance goal on a successful penalty corner opportunity to pull away from Skidmore.
  • Angwin finally helped Skidmore break through the Brewers backline with just 18 seconds in the game, by scoring off the rebound of her initial shot attempt that was saved by the Vassar goalie.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Angwin placed both her shots on goal alongside her second goal of the year
  • Sophomore Colby Paul placed a pair of shots on goal
UP NEXT
